If you’re planning a surf trip to Morocco, you’ve probably come across two popular spots: Tamraght and Taghazout. Located just a few minutes from each other, both villages offer great surf, beautiful coastline, and a relaxed atmosphere.

But depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for, one might suit you better than the other.

In this guide, we’ll break down the main differences to help you decide where to stay.

Taghazout: Lively & Well-Known

Taghazout is the more famous of the two, and for good reason.

What to expect:

  • Busy surf village

  • Lots of cafés, restaurants, and shops

  • Lively atmosphere

  • More nightlife and social scene

It’s a great option if you:

  • want a more vibrant, social environment

  • like having everything within walking distance

  • don’t mind crowds

However, with popularity comes:

  • more people in the water

  • higher prices

  • less calmness

Tamraght: Calm & Authentic

Just 10 minutes away, Tamraght offers a completely different vibe.

What to expect:

  • Quiet, laid-back atmosphere

  • Fewer crowds

  • More local feel

  • Peaceful surroundings

It’s ideal if you:

  • want to relax and disconnect

  • are learning to surf

  • prefer a slower pace

There are three main beaches you can go to when staying in Tamraght, which is why the tourism feels more spread out.

Surf Conditions

Good news: Both Tamraght and Taghazout give you access to the same surf spots (if you have a rental car or stay at one of the surf camps).

You’ll likely surf at:

  • Panorama beach

  • Devil’s Rock

  • Banana Beach

  • K17

  • Anchor Point (more advanced)

So your choice doesn’t limit your surf, it just changes the spots you'll probably be surfing at.

Traveling Solo?

If you’re traveling solo, both places can work, but in different ways.

  • Taghazout → easier to meet people in hostels, cafés, on the beach

  • Tamraght → easier to meet people through small local events, such as silent disco, group dinners, workshops,... . There's a lot of community focus.

Staying in a surf house in Tamraght often makes it easier to connect with others naturally, through shared meals, surf sessions, and daily routines.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Taghazout if you:

  • want energy

  • want nightlife

  • want a vibrant busy vibe

Choose Tamraght if you:

  • want a more relaxed, authentic experience

  • are learning how to surf

  • value calmness and connection

Final Thoughts

Both Tamraght and Taghazout have their charm, but they offer very different experiences. If you’re looking for a place to slow down, improve your surfing, and connect with like-minded people, Tamraght might just be the better fit.
